“Antik bir öğretiye göre bütün insanlık tarihi, dört unsur içinden”, yani toprak, su, ateş ve havadan “geçen bir yolculuktan ibarettir” diyor Alman siyaset kuramcısı Carl Schmitt. İnsanın kâinattaki yerine dair kozmolojik bir sorudan yola çıkıyor ve tarihi, “kara varlığı” olma kaderi karşısında, denizler üzerinde hâkimiyet kurma mücadelelerine referansla yeniden yazıp yorumluyor. Schmitt, Peloponnes Savaşından İnebahtı’ya, Büyük İskender’den 16. ve 17. yüzyılda korsanlar halkına dönüşen İngilizlere ve elbette kolonyal mücadelelerle dünya savaşlarına uzanan, deniz odaklı jeopolitik bir dünya tarihi okuması sunuyor. Yalnızca tarihin değil, felsefenin de araçlarını kullanıyor Schmitt. Mekân kavramının dönüşümüne çağının ötesinden bakıyor ve insanın mekânsal geleceğine dair derin sorular soruyor. Bir gezegen olarak yerküremizin nomosunun Kara ve Deniz mücadelesini aşabilecek yeni ölçülere, daha öte mücadele alanlarına doğru genişleme olanaklarına kafa yoruyor.
