A diamond guitar: The title refers to the prize possession of a young prison inmate, a rhinestone-studded guitar. The guitar serves as the key image of the story, one of friendship, despair and isolation. A Christmas memory is a semi-autobiographical piece about his childhood in rural Alabama with his eccentric, older female cousin, often referred to as his "friend" or "Aunt Sook". The story focuses on their unique bond and their shared experiences during the Christmas season, particularly their tradition of making and sharing fruitcake.
